WILLIAM SHATNER TO OFFICIALLY OPEN THE MARBELLA INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL

From Thursday 1st October – Sunday 4th October, Europe’s capital of glitz and glamour will soon play host to the 4th edition of Marbella International Film Festival.   As the much anticipated date in the Marbella social calendar nears, tickets are becoming hot property for the 4 day event.

Each year, talented filmmakers and industry professionals come together to collaborate and celebrate the latest work produced in their field.  It has been very difficult for the judges to select only 50 films, considering that in 2009 alone, the festival received over 600 films from 52 countries.

This year, we are delighted to welcome Mr William Shatner as our special festival guest.  The legendary actor, who has over 50 years in the entertainment industry will formally open the 2009 festival with the European premier of his latest film, ‘Gonzo Ballet’ on Thursday 1st October.

Just some of the exciting films showcasing include BBC co produced, ‘Jazz Baroness’ an unlikely true love story between a British Jewish Baroness and great jazz pianist Thelonious Monk.  The film features a variety of celebrated figures including Quincy Jones, Sonny Rollins and Dame Helen Mirren.  Exciting submits come in the form of Academy Award nominated feature film, ‘Ruby Blue’ in which British actor Bob Hoskins is wrongly accused of indecent proposal.  Another, Academy Award nominee to be screened is short film, ‘The Morse Collectors’, set in Ireland during the second world war, two children are forced to walk a fine line between responsibility and childhood fantasy.

Marbella is patron to unfounded talent, encouraging the community to get involved in this exciting star studded event.  Therefore this year’s 24 hour film challenge sees budding film makers – along with their cast and crew - presented with the challenge of writing, directing, shooting, editing and producing a 3 to 4 minute film with a given brief in only 24 hours.

Cines Gran Marbella in Puerto Banus is the location to screen the global collection of films while the area around the cinema will be alive in the form of the Festival Village, which will be filled with a host of exciting activities including fashion shows, entertainment acts as well as arts and culture showcases.  Sisu Boutique Hotel, official home to the Marbella International Film Festival will also hold inspirational workshops including a Director’s Q & A, Producer’s master class in addition to a prosthetics and makeup demonstration.

The closing ceremony and awards reception will take place on Sunday 4th October where idols of stage and screen award up and coming talents of today’s industry, including Best Feature Film, Short Film, Animation, Documentary, the winner of the 24 hour film challenge and the New Young Talent Award of 2009.  After the awards have been given out, guests will be treated to a stunning Jean-Christophe Novelli menu, designed by the famous chef prior to live entertainment into the night from special guests.

Europe’s answer to Hollywood closes in on the film maker’s industry gap as the Marbella International Film Festival takes this year’s festivities to new heights and helps Marbella regain its red carpet crown.
